Zack Snyder’s upcoming director’s cut of Justice League will be a movie, not a mini-series like what was previously announced, says Snyder.
Zack Snyder’s upcoming director’s cut of Justice League will be a movie, not a mini-series, according to the filmmaker himself. The 2017 film was marred in controversy after Snyder had to step down before filming wrapped after the tragic suicide of his daughter. Snyder was replaced by Joss Whedon, who reshot and rewrote significant portions of the script. While Snyder was still credited as director in the theatrical cut of the film, many noted that it felt noticeably different than the rest of Snyder’s filmography, and many wondered what his original version of Justice League would have been like. Since the film came out, fans have clamored for the release of the “Snyder Cut,” and hoped the filmmaker would return to the project one day and finish it.

After years of rumors, in May of 2020 Snyder officially announced that his cut of Justice League would be released exclusively on HBO Max. The new cut seemed to be a significant undertaking – with millions of dollars being allocated for its budget and reshoots with several key actors being scheduled. Historically, Snyder’s director’s cuts have been significantly longer than their theatrical releases, and many wondered exactly how much more material was going to be in Snyder’s new version of Justice League. Back during DC FanDome in August 2020, it was announced that the Snyder Cut would be four hours long and release as a four-part miniseries.
However, that no longer seems like the case, as Snyder said that his cut would be a “one shot” film (via What’s On HBO Max). On the social media platform Vero, where Snyder is fairly active, a fan asked the filmmaker to clarify whether or not his cut of Justice League would be a mini-series or a feature film. Snyder responded with “one shot,” seemingly confirming that the Snyder Cut will be a feature film.
Snyder has previously stated that he made “no compromises” when it came to presenting his version of Justice League in the new cut. Because of that, many found the idea that the film would be released in four parts satisfying. The story would have time to breathe, characters would get strong moments, and nothing would have to be cut to fit comfortably within a movie theater’s allotted time spot. Given that the film will be one part, it is unknown if Snyder will end up cutting anything out. However, based on his previous comments about not compromising, and the fact that it’s four hours long, that seems unlikely.
As of now, there hasn’t been any official word from Warner Bros. or HBO about whether the Snyder Cut will be a mini-series or feature film. It seems strange that Snyder would contradict what was officially announced back during DC FanDome, but perhaps something changed between then and now. If the cut really is four hours long, it would seem to be more digestible if it were a mini-series. But, maybe Snyder feels like it would be important to present the film as one cohesive piece. An official announcement or clarification about Snyder’s Justice League will probably come soon, and we’ll have a clearer answer on what exactly the Snyder Cut will be.
