Saurabh Chaudhary scores better than NR, WR score in 10m air pistol trial | More sports News – Times of India

PUNE: It seems the coronavirus-forced one-year break has done good to pistol shooter Saurabh Chaudhary. This was evident as the multiple World Cup gold medallist Saurabh shot national record in the 10m air pistol qualification and final rounds of the selection trial at Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in Delhi on Friday.
This was the first event Saurabh had participated in since action stopped due to the coronavirus outbreak. The last event that the Meerut boy played were the trials held in February last year.
On Friday, Saurabh, 19, shot 590 in the qualification round to break his own national record of 587 set in 2018. His score of 246.9 was 0.5 more than the previous Finals record, again set by Saurabh in 2019. However, the scores will not be recorded as NRs as scores shot in any national competition other than the National Championships or international meets are not registered as NRs.
The Finals score is also more than the current world record of 246.5 set by Korean shooter Kim Song Guk in 2019. However, since Saurabh shot this at a national event and not at a continental or World-level event, this score will not be eligible to qualify as a world record.
Amit Sheoran, who first identified Saurabh’s talent and groomed him to be a national and international champion, said he wasn’t surprised by his ward’s show.
“He has been shooting around 590 throughout the year. He has worked hard during the last year and has made the most of the break. Despite there being no competition, Saurabh has trained regularly and followed the same routine that he did before the Covid break,” Sheoran told TOI.
National pistol coach Samaresh Jung, who has been training Saurabh at the national camp, too said it was business as usual for the young shooter.
“It was a routine day for him. He shot as per the plan and scored what he has been shooting all this while,” former Commonwealth Games champion, Jung said.
When asked about the records, Jung said: “Records are inconsequential for him. He doesn’t care about records, as they keep on getting updated. He has kept himself well and is on the right track, which is more important.” Saurabh has won the quota place for the Tokyo Olympics.
ONGC’s Amanpreet was second with the score of 244.5, while Shiva Narval of Haryana was third with a score of 223.3.
Another Tokyo quota winner, Abhishek Verma, was fourth with 202.6 on board.
In the women’s 10m air pistol event, Manu Bhaker clinched the top position by scoring 239.3 in the final. Representing Haryana, Manu qualified first for the final by shooting 580. Tamil Nadu’s Shri Nivetha was second with a score of 238.2, while Uttar Pradesh shooter Neha was third with a score of 217.4.
