S-Pen in Galaxy S21 Ultra: Why it may be more than just a feature for Samsung – Times of India

Post the launch of last year’s Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series, there were speculations that it is the last Note series smartphone. The rumours were surprising as the Galaxy Note series has always been the best of Samsung phones. While we need to wait and watch to see if Samsung kills or keeps the Note series, the company is surely not killing S-Pen stylus.
The S21 Ultra is the first non-Galaxy Note device to support S-Pen support. However, Samsung is not offering S-Pen stylus for free out-of-the-box and there’s also no slot for it in the phone, like in Galaxy Note devices, where users can tuck it and forget. Galaxy S21 Ultra users will have to buy the stylus.
Samsung has already announced that it will sell S-Pen stylus in two variants — S-Pen and S-Pen Pro– making it clear that Samsung wants to make money from the S-Pen. Samsung has also confirmed that the S-Pen support will be available in more Samsung phones later this year.
“We’ve made the bold decision to expand the S Pen experience to Galaxy S21 Ultra, and plan to expand the S Pen experience across additional device categories in the future,” told Samsung president of mobile TM Roh to The Verge.
Some media reports earlier too have said that Samsung’s foldable phones may come with S-Pen stylus support. Now, with S21 Ultra getting S-Pen support, we can safely assume that Samsung’s future foldable phones too may get it.
Not to forget, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note 10 Lite with S-Pen stylus under Rs 40,000 in 2020. And if S-Pen is more like a software feature now, we can expect Samsung to introduce S-Pen compatibility in mid-range phones as well. After all, Samsung is selling the S-Pen as an accessory and more support for devices makes better business sense.
Like already mentioned, there will be two types of stylus– S-Pen and S-Pen Pro. How will they be different? Well, the S-Pen will simply be a plastic stick with few features. On the other hand, the S-Pen Pro will offer all features of the actual stylus that you get currently with Galaxy Note 20 series.
If you wish to use the S-Pen with any supported Samsung device then you will have to purchase either of these two. Samsung is also integrating Wacom’s tech for styluses. This means you can use any Wacom-backed stylus pen on supported Samsung phones. Not to forget, you will also need to buy a special separate case with a slot for storing the S-Pen.
