Nate Diaz labelled Khabib Nurmagomedov “a p****” after the UFC lightweight champion failed to commit to coming out of retirement.
Nurmagomedov held talks with UFC president Dana White on Friday night and an announcement was teased 24 hours later.
But White revealed Nurmagomedov will only return to the Octagon if he is impressed with Conor McGregor or Dustin Poirier in their rematch next weekend.
And Diaz, who is holding talks over his own return this year, responded by tweeting: “Kabib [sic] is a pussy for real.”
Nurmagomedov will hold on to his lightweight title as he takes in McGregor’s second meeting with Poirier at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi.
He has previously ruled out a rematch with McGregor having choked out the Irishman in the fourth round in 2018.
Nurmagomedov also holds a victory over Poirier having submitted him in the third round a year later.
The Dagestan native insisted last October that he was hanging up his gloves following his win over Justin Gaethje which took his record to 29-0.
He explained he was fulfilling a promise to his mother that he wouldn’t fight on without his father who lost his battle with Covid-19.
But White believes the prospect of adding a 30th victory to his ledger will ultimately tempt him back.
He said: “I thought he made an emotional decision; there was no need to make a hasty decision when we didn’t need to.
“I talked to him and I told him to take his time and we would get together later on, and last night we did.
“The way he feels right now is he’s accomplished all he wanted to accomplish but he thought [Charles] Oliveira looked good in his last fight against Tony Ferguson.
“And next Saturday we have McGregor vs Poirier and [Dan] Hooker vs [Michael] Chandler so his words to me were, ‘I would never tie up the division and hold the belt away from anyone else. These guys have to do something spectacular and make me want to come back’.
“I have a feeling if someone delivers – it could be in the co-main event or the main event – if these guys can do something special, Khabib will fight them.”
Diaz was last in action in November 2018 when he was beaten by Jorge Masvidal.
The UFC is working on a fight between him and Gaethje later this year which could lead Diaz to a third fight with McGregor.
The rivals hold one win apiece following their epic pair of fights in 2016.
