Chelsea could be the only Premier League club in the race for Dayot Upamecano in the summer.
The RB Leipzig centre-back is set to leave Germany in the summer, with the Frenchman having a £37.4 million release clause.
He has been linked with a move to the Premier League before, with Arsenal very keen on signing him in the summer of 2019.
But he still has plenty of suitors in England, with Chelsea, under new boss Thomas Tuchel, expected to make their move in the summer.
Chelsea were expected to be joined by Liverpool, as well as favourites for his signature Bayern Munich in the race to sign the 22-year-old, but that may not now be the case.
Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, talking about the pursuit of Upaemcano, told Sky Germany: “When clubs like Chelsea or Liverpool are interested in him, it shows what qualities the players have.
“There are two other clubs interested in Dayot. We will lose David Alaba. It depends on the player now and how quickly he wants to make a decision.”
But Liverpool have completed the signings of two defenders on January transfer deadline day, which could see them forget about their Upamecano pursuit come the summer.
Having lost Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries earlier in the summer, the Reds have sought to fill the void with the £1.6million signing of Preston defender Ben Davies and they have also agreed a deal with Schalke to sign Ozan Kabak on loan until the end of the season.
That £1million loan deal comes with an option to buy for a further £18million at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
Should Kabak therefore impress at Anfield, the Reds would commit to signing him long-term.
So, that could well see the reigning Premier League champions slip out of the race to sign Upamecano, who would, no doubt, feel he would be anything but guaranteed a starting spot at Anfield.

Bayern and Chelsea could well make that promise, and particularly in the Blues’ case. Having not spent on strengthening the position following the free signing of Thiago Silva, they could well do so this summer and offer Upamecano the starting role alongside Silva.
If they do make the move, it would cost them just under £38million, which is the value of the centre-back’s release clause, but it’s not quite that straight forward with Bayern offering the Frenchman the chance to stay in Bundesliga.
It has been reported Upamecano will decide on his future ‘soon’, so we could yet learn where he is going to end up well in advance of the summer.
